'S' 2006 Flagship Barossa Shiraz
Product Description
Tasting Notes
On release, this wine continues to be very tight and somewhat closed, however once the bottle has been open for a few hours it begins to wake up. In the glass the wine is black, thick and inky with elegant aromas of dark fruits, including plums and cherries, with some subtle charry and chocolate notes. On the palate the fruit is rich and black with dense cherries, and perhaps a touch of licorice. The flavours roll on with fine tannins and balanced acidity.
Cellaring
Smidge recommends drinking this wine between 2010 and 2020.
Viticulture
All All fruit is sourced from vineyards ranging from 6 to 60 years old in the western ranges of the Barossa Valley. The blocks averaged yields of 2 tonnes per acre and all have soil profiles of deep red clay loam.
With mild summer conditions, the vines grew relatively stress free and required minimal irrigation. The flavour in the Shiraz reached its full potential later in the season, coinciding with slightly elevated sugar levels, with the resultant wine being rich and powerful.
Vinification & Maturation
The fruit was picked either by hand or machine, but all fruit was destemmed only, providing a good number of whole berries, especialy in the hand picked fruit. The ferments were allowed to warm up to 28oC and were pumped over three times a day during peak fermentation time. Each batch was pressed on structure and flavour profile, with all the free run and pressings being combined. Average time on skins was 15 days. After 24 hours settling, the wine was transferred to french oak barriques where malolactic fermentation occurred.
The Smitch saw 16 months of oak maturation, all barrels being 2 yo Taransaud barriques, before it was bottled with minimal fining and no filtration.
